Event Info

Back by popular demand of Wichita Grand Opera audiences following a 2016 audience survey, WGO kicks off its 2017-18 Season with Puccini's Madama Butterfly," the moving tale, set in turn-of-the-century Japan, that tells of an innocent young girl who falls in love with an American sailor, but their impulsive marriage leads to tragic consequences.

Korean soprano Yunnie Park and American tenor Kirk Dougherty star as Butterfly and Lt. Pinkerton, as WGO Principal Guest Conductor, Maestro Martin Mazik conducts one of Puccini’s most ravishing scores, following a triumphant tour in Spain, Russia, Slovakia, Germany, and Vienna. WGO protégé, stage director Shayna Leahy, returns to direct Madama Butterfly for the second time, after directing many of WGO’s most successful productions, including Turandot, The Pirates of Penzance, and Il Trovatore, among others.
